Kathy Denious
I am a primary, one-on-one teacher and curriculum designer for children aged eight through 22. I create custom lesson plans in major subject areas and am a replacement for school-based learning. My clients are in the metro Phoenix area - face-to-face interaction is a critical element.
My students have diagnosed, neurologically-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia, autism, and executive functioning disorder.
I am a vocal proponent of Structured Literacy for those with language-based learning disabilities. This is a scientific, evidence-based approach proven to be successful.
Structured Literacy is explicit, systematic teaching that focuses on phonological awareness, word recognition, phonics, decoding, spelling, and syntax at the sentence and paragraph levels.
I meet with you and your child and learn what his/her primary learning challenges are. I build a relationship with your son or daughter, a relationship based on trust. And I create a curriculum that encompasses a variety of subject areas centered on your child's interests. Do you have a daughter fascinated by rabbits? Then we will learn anatomy (science), graph facts about different breeds (math), do watercolors (art), and read from Watership Down (English) - all about rabbits. Together we rekindle the joy of learning while giving her a personalized toolkit for success.
